That you can have my padded cycle shorts when you pry them from my cold dead hands.
Padded cycle shorts probably don't fall into the necessity column. After all, one of the things I love about cycling is that you can jump onto your bike in practically any type of clothes and just go. How comfortable you'll be after a couple of miles is another matter though....
So no, not necessities. But without them I don't think I'd be as comfortable in the saddle.
Before we get to the jokes, let's make something clear. They are not lycra shorts. I have nothing against lycra shorts, but I feel that I should lose a few more pounds before inflicting the world with that sight.
No, what they are is a wonder of invention. They are a set of shorts with a beautifully designed padded inner part, along with a band across each thigh to stop all the innards moving around. And even better, they look to all intents and purposes like normal shorts, and not that I'm wearing a nappy.
They are made for people that want to head out and be comfortable whilst doing it, without looking like they are Bradley Wiggins after letting himself go a bit.
So let's think about this. They keep you comfortable. They stay where they should. They don't look ridiculous. They're fit for purpose. In a world where so many things are poorly designed, that's a whole lot of win.

And if you're still wondering why I'm gushing here over a simple set of shorts, with words like "wonder" and "beautiful", well you do 20 miles on poorly tarmacked country lanes and then see if you use the same language as me.

ReplyDeletePhew!
I use the "standard issue" lycra padded cycle shorts. But hidden under more "normal" garb. Way to go when you're of bus pass age. Less risk of frightening horses. And others.
ReplyDeleteAlmost essential wear if you're going to do anything more than a ten mile potter and want to stay comfortable.
